I watched it a while back (and again recently) and I found it strangely compelling, maybe because I like political intrigue. The weird thing is that every character but Freddy is morally bankrupt--they're all bad guys just to greater and lesser degrees. It's one of those shows where if anybody dies, you cheer, because they're all horrible. When characters feud, you don't care who wins, because they're all rotten. I got the impression watching it that nothing can save us from our political class.
