Ask a Democrat if they want to be like Putin and they’ll tell you no. They’ll tell you Putin is a dictator. Putin is authoritarian. Putin hates democracy. Zelenskyy, on the other hand, is a shining beacon of democracy, a glorious light in an otherwise dark corner of the world.
Well, these two arch enemies may have more in common with each other … and with the Democrat party then we realized.
Vladimir Putin is coming up for election this spring, the fifth time he’s run. If past performance is indicative of future results (as it sometimes is in Russian elections), he likely will win by a large margin. In fact, it would be quite a news story if he did not win by a landslide. But this year, a bold 40-year-old challenger named Yekaterina Duntsova threw her hat into the ring. Duntsova is running for President of Russia as an antiwar candidate. So for a brief and fleeting moment, Putin was not running unopposed.
Then Putin did a Putiny thing. He threw Duntsova off the ballot. He actually had a reason for doing this, although it is not really a very good reason. Putin says that Duntsova did not complete her election paperwork properly, rendering her ineligible to participate. The election is months away and Putin also decided there is no remedy—she cannot just fix her paperwork and re-submit. She’s gone. Out.
Well, that seems sort of totalitarian, doesn’t it? But Putin actually had more of a case against Duntsova than the states of Maine and Colorado do against Trump. Duntsova apparently really did mess up something on the paperwork. Trump, on the other hand, did nothing more egregious than simply be Trump. The reason some states want to wipe Trump’s name off the ballot is that baseless allegation that he led an insurrection, which happens to be the first insurrection in human history in which not one single insurrectionist showed up. Insurrection is a serious federal crime, yet Trump has never been charged with insurrection.
No one who participated in or near or roundabout the January 6 event at the Capitol has ever been even charged for insurrection, much less indicted, much less convicted. No one who watched the January 6 event on TV or the Select Committee hearings later on was charged with insurrection. No one who tweets obnoxious tweets about January 6 has been charged with insurrection. So while Ms. Duntsova truly did bungle her paperwork, Donald Trump did not commit the crime cited to keep him off the ballot. If he did, you would think someone would have charged him.
So this makes Colorado and Maine more authoritarian and totalitarian than Putin. That’s a good Blue State campaign slogan—Vote Blue, We’re More Totalitarian than Putin!
Enter Mr. Zelenskyy and hold your beer. In 2024, Ukraine was due to have a presidential election. Zelensky won the last election in 2019 by a huge margin, but the prolonged war has not helped his popularity much. While Zelenskyy entered the presidency as a bit of a dashing anti-hero, the country has not prospered under his khaki crusade. When Putin invaded Ukraine, Zelenskyy led his country into a war that could not be won. Ukrainians are ferocious people, but Zelenskyy has no war-time experience. He has no military experience. He has no political experience, except he has set up a couple of offshore companies. If you are David and you want to go to war against Goliath, Zelenskyy is not the guy you’d put in charge of your army.
Mr. Zelenskyy is a former TV star. It is hard to say what Ukraine is thinking right now, but life has certainly gotten exponentially worse for the people of Ukraine since Zelenskyy came into office. And while Zelenskyy likes to talk about freedom, he’s closed down some churches. He’s set up laws giving the government authority over journalists. Then, for grins, he outlawed the speaking of Russian in certain parts of Ukraine—the parts where they speak Russian. Can you imagine outlawing speaking Spanish in New York or Miami or El Paso? It is not hard to imagine that the people of Ukraine are getting tired of Zelenskyy and in democracies, that frustration and rage usually gets expressed at the ballot box.
Over in Russia, Duntsova campaigned that she wanted the war to end, perhaps there were people in Ukraine thinking the same thing. Duntsova got thrown off the ballot but Zelenskyy has no opponents in the next election.
That’s because there is no “next election.” Zelenskyy suspended all future elections. From now until forever or unless he feels like starting them up again, the polls in Ukraine are closed and no one but Zeleknskyy can be president. Ukraine is under martial law due to the war, which Zelenskyy took to mean that elections are a quaint remnant of an earlier time. Putin is at least holding a show-election; Zelenskyy won’t even do that.
Isn’t it ironic that the Democrats encouraging the United States to send money to support “democracy” in Ukraine are sending it to a guy who called off all elections? What’s next, sending money to Kim Jon Un in North Korea for his defense of freedom of religion? How about sending donations to Afghanistan for their great work in advancing girls’ education and women’s rights?
The fact that the mainstream media are not covering the story tells us a lot. But there are even deeper meanings. Despite cries (howls, really) that democracy is crippled, democracy will die, democracy is threatened, democracy is challenged, and all of the rest, Putin, Zelenskyy, and the Democrat Party do not really care much about actual voting. In fact, as Joy Behar recently said on The View, perhaps the people should not even really be voting anymore…After all, the Democrat Party, like Zelenskyy and Putin, can just tell us who the next President is.
But it also tells us that the whole world is more globalist than we realized. The trend to squash electoral competition, to ditch or rig elections, to advance a one-party system, and to push competing candidates off into a ditch is alive and well… Whether you go to Russia or Ukraine or a Blue State, elections are in peril because opposition is routinely crushed.
Oh, don’t get me wrong—Democrats are fine with elections as long as they can specify how you can vote. Like Rob Reiner said on X, democracy will die unless you vote for Biden. (Think of that—unless you vote the way Rob Reiner tells you to vote, there can be no democracy…)
The reason these guys are pulling extreme stunts to keep themselves in power is the tell. The “existential threat” is not to democracy at all—it’s to totalitarianism. Dare to think for yourself, dare to hold contrarian opinions, dare to look at a lefty and tell them you don’t think Biden is a good president…that’s democracy. Articulating your own opinion on social media or at the family Thanksgiving dinner table is what they’re scared of. They’re scared of memes and jokes and mockery. They’re scared because we know the emperor has no clothes.
Putin is a tyrant who does not want an opponent on the ballot. Zelenskyy is a tyrant who does not even want elections. And Democrats …. they are copying the Russian and Ukrainian playbooks. No wonder Nancy Pelosi acted like a drippy fan-girl when Zelenskyy paid a visit to the Capitol. She wants to do what he managed to do—eliminate democracy and cede all power to her.
